Rev. Fr. Thomas Mathew
Reverend Father Thomas Mathew is the 3rd child of the late K.E. Mathew and late Mariamma Mathew, Kenkeraseril House of Naduvilathu Family from Omalloor, Kerala, India.
After obtaining his preliminary education from Catholicate High-school and College in Pathanamthitta, Kerala, India, he went to study Radiology Technology and also worked in Miraj Medical College Hospital, Miraj, India and then later worked at Tata Main Hospital, Jamshedpur, India. In 1972, he left India to work in Lusaka Teaching Hospital under the Ministry of Health in Lusaka, Zambia and then migrated to the United States in 1974, establishing residency in New York. He worked as a Radiological Technologist in various hospitals in New York City (Coney Island Hospital, Wyckoff Heights Hospital, and Flushing Hospital). In 2014, he retired as department head of Radiology from Robert L. Yeager Health Center under the County of Rockland in Pomona, New York.
In 1976, he married the late Moniamma Abraham, a registered nurse and daughter of the late Joseph Abraham and late Rachel Abraham, Puthenveedu, Konni, Kerala, solemnized by the late lamented His Grace Thomas Mar Makarios, 1st Bishop of the American Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Church. They have three children, Ruby, Julee and Alvin.
As a layman, he was one of the founding members of St. Thomas Church (now in Yonkers), the first church of the Malankara Orthodox Church in the United States and St. Baselios Church in Brooklyn, New York. Later when he and his family moved from Brooklyn to Rockland County in 1981, he helped to establish the first church in Rockland County, our very own St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Church in Sparkill, New York in 1985.
He was ordained as sub-deacon in 1986 by the late lamented His Grace Yuhannon Mar Severios, Cochin Diocese. In 1994, he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Theology from Alliance Theological Seminary and Christian College of Nyack in Nyack, New York. In 1995, he was ordained as a full deacon and priesthood by the late lamented Mathews Mar Barnabas, 2nd Bishop of the American Diocese.
He performed his priestly services as the Assistant Vicar at St. Mary’s Church in Jackson Heights, Queens, St. Mary’s Church in West Sayville, NY and was also the founding father and Vicar of the St. Baselios Church in Woodside, Queens (now in Elmont, Queens). Since 1999, he has continued his services as our Vicar of St. Peter’s and St Paul’s Church, Sparkill, New York (now in Tappan).
